TASK-9 (Trailing Air Scenting K-9)

And in response to Gerry Foster's question, "how do the dogs find the bodies?",

Tricia  Heldmann answered as follows: "The analogy we usually give is the one from the Peanuts comic strip about the character "Pigpen" -the little guy with the cloud of dust and dirt around him. Each person is a little like Pigpen. We all have an invisible cloud around us that is scent. Each of us has an individual scent characteristic that the dogs pick up -on land. In the water, they pick up the generic human scent that rises to the surface in body oils and gases, whether the person is alive or deceased. Some people think it is the bubbles, not the scent. In the water, the dogs do like some visual confirmation of the game", whether it is the diver coming up, a bumper bobbing up, or bubbles. I tell them that this is the training and the rest is yet to come!"
